BROTHERS Neil and Ivan McCormack may never have fulfilled their dreams of becoming rock stars. But the former Dublin indie musicians found themselves finally being feted at the Savoy Cinema last night at the European premier of the film ‘Killing Bono’.
Based on Neil McCormack’s book ‘I Was Bono’s Doppleganger’ the film tells the story of himself and Ivan’s failed attempts to launch themselves in the music business while school friends U2 saw that dream come true.
“This is how we always imagined we would come back to Dublin,” Neil joked to reporters as himself and brother Ivan were interviewed under the bright lights on the red carpet.
Given the ‘Killing Bono’ film title, it wasn’t a surprise that one Paul Hewson was not in attendance.
“Bono is in New York where U2 are recording an album, and trying to fix the ‘Spider-Man’ musical.
“It’s actually much better than everyone is saying. But it needs a bit of work, so him and the Edge are working on those things,” said Neil, who also penned the band’s biography ‘U2 by U2′.
However, he said that Bono and U2 had given the film, in which the singer is played by Belfast actor Martin McCann, the thumbs up.
“Bono has seen the film. He liked it but just thought the actor playing him should have been bit taller,” added Neil.
London actor Ben Barnes plays the role of Dubliner Neil in the film but confessed last night that he had based his accent on co-star Robert Sheehan, who hails from Portlaoise and who takes on the role of younger brother Ivan.
“I just copied whatever Rob said in the pub. It sounded close enough,” said the ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ star.
Another former schoolmate of U2 at Mount Temple school in Dublin, musician Frank Kearns came face to face with the actor playing himself in the film, David Fennelly.
“I started a band called Frankie Corpse and the Undertakers in Mount Temple which kick-started other bands forming including U2,” said Mr Kearns last night.
