Bono and Edge busk for the homeless at festive charity gig in Dublin
Bono and The Edge joined by host of other Irish musicians for fundraising show

Bono has joined The Edge at the annual Christmas Eve charity busking session outside the Gaiety theatre in Dublin, performing along with a host of other famous Irish musicians in aid of the city’s homeless.
The event took place in support of the Simon Community, a homelessness charity that helps people who are homeless or at risk of becoming so. It was Bono’s first appearance at the charity gig in three years, and his seventh overall.
The U2 members serenaded onlookers with a song from their latest album, as well as two Christmas carols – O Holy Night and O Night Divine – before they were joined by an ensemble to sing Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), a rock song originally sung by Darlene Love in 1963. Bono told the crowd: “As the buckets go around, fill them with silver, fill them with hope – [it’s] the season of hope.”
Definite highlight of the Dublin Charity Busk for homeless services - Philip, currently in a Dublin hostel, sings with @glen_hansard #Dublin
132 people are talking about this
Crowds had gathered around a makeshift stage on Grafton Street from 4pm on Monday. Other performers included organiser Glen Hansard, Damien Rice, Danny O’Reilly, Imelda May, Luke Clerkin, Mundy and RóisÃn O.
Rice played a slowed-down cover of Creep, the Radiohead song from their first album, while Hansard played guitar for a rousing rendition of George Michael’s Faith, sung by a man named Philip who is currently in a Dublin hostel and is assisted by the Simon Community.
There are almost 10,000 homeless people across Ireland, including nearly 4,000 children. Inner City Helping Homeless, a Dublin charity, said more than 100 people were found sleeping rough on Dublin’s streets on Sunday night. Affordable new houses are not being built quickly enough and rent rates have risen significantly, campaigners have claimed.

Bono Recruits One Direction's Liam Payne, DJ Khaled and More For AIDS Fundraising Campaign

If you donate at least $10 to Bono's charity (RED), the singer is giving you a chance to drink tea with him and Julia Roberts, enjoy a private concert from U2 or party in Las Vegas with "Magic Mike" star Channing Tatum.
Those are three of the "experiences" donors can possibly win after giving money to (RED), which raises funds to fight AIDS. The campaign dubbed "(RED) SHOPATHAN," in its second year, launches Tuesday, one week before World AIDS Day, which is Dec. 1.
"It is a battle now for funding. It's just a street battle, pitch battle, and we have to keep this stuff in the news or literally those people don't get the drugs. It's that simple," Bono said in an interview with The Associated Press last week. "We have to just remind people that America has led the war on this tiny little virus and is winning the war, but it is unthinkable, but it is possible, that if we stall on funding then we start to undo all this good work."
Other "experiences" that can be earned after donating on Omaze.com/RED include a night out with Neil Patrick Harris; tickets to see Broadway's "Hamilton" and backstage access with show star Javier Munoz; a Snapchat and jet ski adventure with DJ Khaled; and a studio hangout with One Direction's Liam Payne.
The campaign will return to Jimmy Kimmel Live! for a full show on Tuesday night, where Bono, The Killers, Herbie Hancock, DJ Khaled and Halsey will perform, while special guests include Roberts, Tatum, Patrick Harris and Kristen Bell.
Bono will sing a re-worked version of Cole Porter's "Well, Did You Evah!" and the Killers will perform Christmas songs.
"The Killers are doing Christmas songs to end all Christmas songs," Bono said with a laugh, "which actually, believe or not, has me singing 'if you don't help people with AIDS you're going to hell.'"
"I wrote that line," Kimmel said during the interview about the original song, written with Brandon Flowers of The Killers. "But that's true - if you don't help people with AIDS you are going to hell, and that seems like a good enough reason to help alone. I mean, just think of yourselves."
Last year's campaign offered donors a visit to the set of Game of Thrones, walking a red carpet with Meryl Streep and spending time with George Clooney. This year's offers also include flying to Korea to hang out with K-Pop star G-Dragon and a "VIP Virgin event experience" with Virgin Group founder Richard Branson. Entries close on January 18, 2017.
"This is a really hopeful campaign and we try to be playful, we try not to bring anyone down, but actually the politics behind it is very serious. And the money we raise will keep people alive," Bono said.
This year marks (RED)'s 10-year anniversary, which Bono said has raised more than $360 million and impacted 70 million people through HIV testing, prevention, counseling and other services.
"This is a big deal in my life," he said.

A large crowd gathered to join in the sing-along outside Dunnes Stores, with many people taking to social media to post photographs and videos.
They kicked it off with Hozier’s hit song Take Me To Church, and followed it with U2’s When Love Comes To Town.

Bono: Out & About for Christmas one month after his accident
Bono showed off his injuries for the first time since his nasty cycling accident on Christmas Eve, refusing to be held down by the unfortunate incident.
The U2 front man sported a cast on his left arm as he hid behind a thick scarf and under a camouflage hat, walking to The Cliff Townhouse restaurant in Dublin to party with celebrity friends.
The cycling mishap saw the band cancel their Tonight Show residency in the immediate aftermath in November and on Wednesday, it was the annual Grafton Street festive performance that Bono was forced to pull out of.
Bono's left arm was taped up in a heavy-duty cast and he was forced to robe his jacket around his shoulders with the arm out of the sleeve.
The star is said to have broken his arm in six places when he collided with another cyclist while out in New York City.
The star's 'high energy' bike injuries required three metal plates, 18 screws and five hours of reconstructive surgery, doctors said at the time.
Celebrating the festive season in his native Ireland on Wednesday, Bono donned his signature tinted glasses and matched his scarf to his hat as he tried to go relatively unnoticed.
Despite it being structured with plasters and tape, Bono managed to grasp a phone with his left hand.

Bono and his wife Ali Hewson have been enjoying a day at the races, as is their annual festive tradition.
The pair showed off their generous side when they decided to treat the Irish press to some St Stephen's Day bubbles.
Bono looked in a great mood as he handed out the fizz and chatted to fans and photographers.
On Christmas Eve, the star also showed his generous side by busking on Dublin's Grafton street in aid of the homeless charity Simon Community and the Peter McVerry Trust.

Bono reveals working title of new U2 album
BONO has revealed the next U2 album may be called '10 Reasons To Exist'.
The 52-year-old said the group have been working steadily throughout 2012 on the new record, which will be their 13th studio album. But a release date could be some time off.
"Within the band, we've been calling it '10 Reasons To Exist' – but I will tell you we might have at least six of them," joked Bono.
Struck down by flu over Christmas, the rock singer missed the start of the annual Leopardstown racing festival on St Stephen's Day which he normally attends with his family.
"I've loved being home. I had the best Christmas ever," he said in a radio interview with Amanda Brunker.

The Unforgettable Hair
Adam Clayton goes back to his roots with new do
Adam, December 2012. Adam, circa 1979 What`s going on, Adam? Are all hairdressers in Dublin on holidays? |
U2 bassist Adam Clayton attended the band’s Christmas party last night, sporting a hair style with a lot of Elevation in the roots.
The 52-year-old was snapped going into Harry’s Bar in Dublin’s docklands, where he joined Bono and The Edge and pals of the group including artist Guggi for the annual knees up.
But fans were surprised to see Adam, who for years has sported a tight crop, with longer grey hair. And he had ditched his usual leather jacket and t-shirt for a patterned shirt and navy slacks. He wore an overcoat against the winter chill.
Fans waiting outside in the cold on Hanover Quay to meet the band as they entered the bar included husband and wife Alon and Maya Loey who had travelled from Israel to see the group for Christmas.
The evening’s entertainment was provided by comedian Katherine Lynch who told Adam, the only remaining single member of the group, that Lisa Murphy was back on the market if he was interested in hooking up with the ex of solicitor Gerald Keane.
Last year the band were entertained by Limerick’s Rubberbandits who performed at the same venue for the Principal management get together.
It has been a dramatic year for the bassist.
Last July his former personal assistant Carol Hawkins was jailed for seven years for stealing €2.8 million of Mr Clayton’s money after she was convicted on 181 counts of theft, over a four year period. Clayton attended the proceedings everyday in the Circuit Criminal Court, and gave evidence for the prosecution.
His attire in court was described to be like that of an architect, and he wore black rimmed glasses and a tight crew cut, which he has since grown out.

Christmas brings out the best in people as their generosity and love flows to those around them.
Take Bono for instance, who, days after busking in the streets for charity, decided to treat the Irish press to some Boxing Day fizz. The U2 front man was visiting the Leopardstown race course in Dublin with wife Ali Hewson andtheir daughters Jordan and Eve.

Vintage Christmas
An article about old times Christmases in Ireland (Rolling back the Christmases) reminds us of U2´s first time in England , "hoping to crack London".
"...Just before Christmas in 1979, a young Dublin band billed as The U2s arrived in England.
They were hoping to crack London.
"I want to replace the bands in the charts now, because I think we're better'' said the precocious lead singer, known as Bono Vox. (It had to be Bono!!!)
However, only nine paying punters turned up in Islington to watch them..."
To round the memories off, a rare video of U2 playing John Lennon Cover
"So this is Christmas"on a TV Show.(probably mid-80´s, after the release of The Joshua Tree)
Bono: Busking in Grafton Street (Revisited)
As he did last year, on Christmas Eve Bono and a group of friends ( Oscar-winning musician Glen Hansard ,Mundy, Declan O'Rourke and Hothouse Flowers rocker Liam O'Maonlai) went busking in Grafton Street for two local charities: Simon Community and the Peter McVerry Trust.
Although the group started off in Grafton Street, they were soon moved to the entrance of St Stephen's Green Park due to safety concerns.
The group with cooperation of fans and passers-by sang three songs: "Silent Night," "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)", and Mic Christopher's song, "Heyday".
