OVERWHELMING DEMAND: New tour dates and places

It’s been called ‘the tour of the year’ and the band are set to take The Joshua Tree Tour 2017 to Mexico and South America this year, as well as returning to more cities in the US.

New dates announced today include a run of September US shows which open in Detroit - the city where the band first played a headline stadium show back on April 30th, 1987 at the Silverdome - followed by stops in Buffalo, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Kansas City, St. Louis and San Diego.

In October the tour will head to Mexico City followed by concerts in Bogota, Buenos Aires, Santiago and Sao Paulo.

For Rolling Stone the show reveals "a live act simply without peer… It really felt like they were reapplying for the job of the best band in the world by showing how they earned the title in the first place.”

The band "not only unpack a masterpiece but provide moments to hold on to forever”. (Consequence of Sound)

Ticket prices start at $35.00 with general admission floor tickets at $70.00. There will be an exclusive priority presale for U2.com subscribers starting Thursday, June 8th (10am) through Saturday, June 10th (5pm) local times for subscribers who may have missed out on the previous presale opportunity along with new subscribers. There will be a 4 ticket limit for subscriber purchases and a 6 ticket limit commencing with public sales. In North America, all floor tickets will be paperless unless otherwise noted. Special guest for the North America concert dates to be announced.

In Mexico and South America, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds have been confirmed as special guest for all dates. Tickets will go on sale Wed. June 14th in Mexico City, June 15th in Bogota, Buenos Aires and Santiago and Friday June 16th in Sao Paulo. Dressing very casually,  with sandals and navy blue pants, Adam Clayton, U2's bass player, tried to pass unnoticed in the cabin of Devassa, on Sunday - the first day of parades of the Special Group of Rio.Alongside Brazilian friends,  he did not hesitate to take pictures and sign autographs. He walked around without bodyguards and took his own beer until he was "discovered" by journalists.

He did not give interviews, but stayed until almost 4am in the Sambadrome and soon made friends with fans. He said after watching the dance of the Marquis of  Sapucaí: "I found it very interesting." Adam, who is in Brazil to honor the artist and friend Martin Creed, denied that the band do not want to go on tour. "No, that's not true. And we're recording. "

After many years, U2´s show went to Africa and it was time to celebrate. As it was said in U2.com "Tonight (in Cape Town) felt like a truly global event" as the show  went out live on radio stations across the African Continet and via u2.com  on every other continent.

U2 in July`s issue of Q Magazine

Q magazine has published an interview to U2 when they were touring in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The interview appears on July`s issue of the magazine. Some of the  band`s comments:

"It`s a pity that Horizon...had a limited horizon...because we  just got the single wrong." Adam Clayton (he means "Get on your Boots"). "I think it`s pretty outrageous now , but I guess it must have been a pretty crap single."

"Steve Lillywhite would always come to our shows and say ' You, fuckers,that was so much better than the album version.Next time, please tour the songs for a few months and then we`ll make the album," says Edge. "This time we thought ,well yeah, let`s see what happens..."

Last Minutes in Brazil

Bono says goodbye to Brazil (and South America) this evening when he arrives at Sao Paulo air base.

A video of Bono singing  Talking Head`s Psycho Killer  at Bar Secreto in Sao Paulo  has appeared in the net:

Bono, Edge, and Larry sing a few songs at a party in the early morning hours following the last show of U2's South American tour. We're not sure the order of songs. Larry sings The Wild Rover a cappella. Edge sings Let's Dance with Larry and Dom (from Muse) on drums, and sings Miss You with local guitarists. Bono sings Psycho Killer also with Larry and Dom on drums. It's part of a regular Wednesday event at the bar called 'This Is Not A Karaoke' where real musicians play while song lyrics show on a screen in front of the singer. More videos, here. Goodbye South America!!

"Tonight is our last night in South America and we wanted to remember this,' said Bono after Until The End of the World. 'So we're going out live on radio and online across the whole of your mesmerising continent as an excuse so we can have the record of this show. This show will last for ever.'
The show was broadcast live   and people from Venezuela, Peru Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Brazil  listened  and all those tuning in worldwide on U2.com . A more than fitting way to finish an unforgettable  leg of the tour. 


Steve Lillywhite had flown down from New York and when I Will Follow took over from 'Real Thing' Steve, the original producer of this track, was amazed to hear it 'sounding as good as it did 30 years ago'. And this audience is loud, as he told his followers on Twitter: 'People from Sao Paulo know how to make a noise at a U2 concert !'
Larry had a Brazilian flag across the drum kit as the band were introduced:'Ring those bells Edge, ring those bells.'

'I hope you like our current mode of transportation,' continued Bono, before Still Haven't Found. 'The space station has been to all kinds of interesting places and we mean it when we say that we are coming all the way over here to here to see you.
'Usually we sing to our audience but here our audience sings to us.
'Usually we put on a show for our audience but here you put on a show for us.'
No need to actually sing the song as the whole place was singing it for him. 'Let's go to church now...' After Pride, a special guest: ''We are great fans of a truly great artist here in Brazil,' explained Bono, 'His name is Seu Jorge.' Loud reception as Seu takes the stage to join Bono for a beautiful acoustic duet of 'The Model'. Another guest followed, a young woman to read a Brazilian translation of Beautiful Day which the band then follow with their own translation, seamlessly giving way to Miss Sarajevo -.

And a great night is only going to get better.

Julian Lennon´s Birthday Party

On 8th April it was Julian Lennon´s 48th birthday. Bono dedicated him his song "Stuck in a moment"(written for another dear friend, the late Michael Hutchence) and the whole Morumbi Stadium sang him "happy birthday".On Sunday Julian made a party at a disco in Sao Paulo. Bono, Edge and Morleigh and Larry were seen there as well as Matthew Bellamy (Muse´s front man) and his girlfriend, actress Kate Hudson.

Zooropa!!!

The heavens opened and drenched everyone ahead of the band taking the stage for the second night in Sao Paulo but this turned out to be a memorable night for all kinds of other reasons.
'Real Thing' opened the show and then, 'for special reasons, this is our first single' announced Bono as  the band broke into a surprise that  sounded as fresh and fierce as the day of its release in 1979.
'I had the feeling it was out of control
I was of the opinion it was out of control....'

Rain, what rain? 'Boots', Magnificent, Mysterious Ways, Elevation, the joint was jumping at Estadio Morumbi, it was well out of control.
'Mucho obrigado, Thank you to Muse,' said Bono. 'Extraordinarily talented musicians.'
'Nos amamos o Brazil... We love you... but you know that don't you?'

Still, everybody needs reassurance, so it was a good moment to make sure, he explained.
'Edge is a very insecure guy and asked me to check that you don't love other bands the way that you love us...'
The general ovation that followed suggested there wasn't too much to be concerned about, but still, as Bono continued, 'You've had other lovers passing through - Oasis, Coldplay, now Muse - so  Edge needs to know how much you love him.'
Brazil confirmed its undying love in the loudest possible terms. Tonight, in case of any doubt, Bono also confirmed it was  Larry Mullen on drums and Adam Clayton on bass guitar.
'And if I wasn't insecure I wouldn't have become a singer - my name is Bono.
We try to serve you. We salute you...'

Special thanks went out to Governor Alckmin for the loan of Sao Paulo. 'No work tomorrow, is that right? U2 day. Its official! Alright new song, this is North Star.'

Beautiful Day segued into an stadium-wide sing-a-long of Singing in the Rain before Vertigo turned the stadium into clubland again. And then, out of nowhere, after Miss Sarajevo, a total surprise, the return of Zooropa, which hasn't been played live since the year it was released way back in another century.
'Zooropa... a bluer kind of white
Zooropa... it could be yours tonight.'

You know a track is making a little bit of musical history when it starts trending on Twitter which Zooropa did tonight - amazing moment for Brazilian U2 fans.

'Don't know what to say to you,' exlaims Bono after 'Streets. 'What an unforgettable night. We will never forget this night. Good looking people!'

And with another special dedication of 'Moment of Surrender' to those in sorrow, 'mothers and fathers without children',  after Thursday's events in Rio, the second show in Sao Paulo comes to a close.

Saturday Night in Sao Paulo

'Trem das Onze', a samba composition by Adoniran Barbosa, was playing ahead of the band's arrival on stage tonight. It's one of the most famous of all Brazilian songs but when it gave way to 'Space Oddity' finally Brazil knew that U2 were heading to the stage and before we knew it we were all caught up in 'Even Better Than The Real Thing'.

'Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo...' Bono sang, the whole stadium grateful that there was no rain coming down as the first of three shows here got underway.  'Even Better', already in contention for the best opening track of the tour to date, led into I Will Follow and then 'Boots, two tracks written thirty years apart but you'd never know it from the reaction of this super-passionate audience. Phenomenal sound from all around.

We've had some mixed weather in Sao Paulo today but it was dry as the first of three shows in this city got underway, with spectacular shards of lightning in the sky illuminating a helicopter buzzing over the stadium.

'Wow! Thank you. Obrigado.' said Bono. 'Tonight is Saturday in Sao Paulo...'

Introductions to the band took a pizza twist with Bono describing himself as the pepperoni pizza, Adam as the banana pizza and Larry... 'No cheese, no tomato, no pastry, no pizza - we call him the good looking pizza. Larry Mullen on drums.'

An acoustic version of Stuck In A Moment made its way back into the set tonight, dedicated to Julian Lennon to whom the band led a rendition of Happy Birthday.

'We'd like to sing this song for a friend of ours, Julian Lennon... here's a song about friendship.'

With a stadium of Brazilians singing along word for word, it was a little bit spine-tingling, as was the poetry read by a young woman who made her way into the spotlight  before Beautiful Day.

'We're so proud to be friends of Brazil,' said Bono, as,  a beautiful night coming to a close, he paused  to pay tribute to the people of this country and to President Dilma Rousseff. 'We salute you, we salute her.'

And then an incredibly touching moment with Moment of Surrender going out to those who lost their lives in the shooting at Tasso da Silveira school in Rio di Janeiro on Thursday.
' This has been a difficult time for Brazil... and what happened in Tasso da Silveira.
'We'd like to dedicate this to the children and the mothers and their families and the teachers and the people of Brazil.'

And as Moment of Surrender offered its beautiful benediction, the names of the children who lost their lives illuminated the giant screens around the stage. Unforgettable.

U2 Met Brazilian President

U2 and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff

 The band met with President Dilma Rousseff at her official residence, the Palacio da Alvorada.

Visiting a chapel at the residence and sharing lunch, they expressed their sympathy over the tragic events in Rio and discussed how the world could learn from Brazil's achievements in fighting poverty.

'She has great passion as an anti-poverty campaigner,' said Bono. 'And is proud of Brazil's achievements in poverty reduction, although impatient about their need to achieve more.
'We also talked about corruption and the inspiring Ficha Limpa campaign in Brazil. I asked her to support the ONE campaign's call for transparency in the way that global gas and mining companies operate. The band and I appreciated her giving us so much of her valuable time.'





The band's arrival was greeted by passionate Brazilian fans who've been camped outside the residence for days. There was also a chance to take in the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer who designed the residence and much of the city.  Later the band flew on to Sao Paulo to begin rehearsals for Saturdays' opening show in the country.

In the canon of legendary U2 songs, 'Bad', from 1984's The Unforgettable Fire, has a special place.

On U2360 it's appearance has been rare, unpredictable... and breathtaking. So it was in the half-light and rain of Buenos Aires on April 3rd, 2011. 


Bono said in an interview last year in Australia ,"We're fighting for relevance. Being successful is a lot easier than being relevant". With " Bad", the band has always been relevant.

León Gieco talks to Eduardo Fabregat for Pagina 12 after singing with U2 at Estadio Unico in La Plata last concert of the 360º Tour.


Things were about to close  up when I came across Leon Gieco in the backstage of U2 concert in La Plata last Sunday. We chatted about the great musical quality of Muse and the enormity of what was about to happen. Leon had never thought that he would sing "Solo le pido a Dios" (I only ask God) with Bono in second voice and Edge playing subtle tones and the whole of Estadio Unico as chorus.


"I was in Chaco  giving a show for HIJOS (organisation of the children of the Disappeared  in the Dirty War in Argentina) and I got a phone call from U2 production saying that they wanted me in La Plata, so I took the car and drove here," Leon explained.
There Leon Gieco discovered that Bono wanted something more than just sharing a glass of wine.
"Let`s play that song," the  singer proposed, "that I  couldn`t sing well in River." That`s how Leon ended up rehersing with U2.
"At the beginning I was frozen, I was there to enjoy the show ; I had some wine in the VIP  and all of a sudden I was about to get on the stage with these people, let`s face it , this was not just a concert at Grand Rex theatre.If they told you a couple of days earlier, you might get ready, but like this? Bono laughed and asked me, "Did  you think you came here just to drink some wine and that was it?"


Leon commented on the fact that he didn`t take real dimension of what was about to happen until much later .
"The following day, you react.But after all, they are just people! And Bono is person who takes you into account a lot, he knows everything that is going on in the place he plays...I`m sure he must be thinking who he will sing with in Brazil."


Impossible to forget that they are superstars, but they are also flesh and blood people, I added.


"All of us have to poop..."

What about the show, Leon?

"I loved it, though I was not in a good place. I was invited to watch and listen to it from a great place, but then that guy(Bono) fucked it up!" (laughter) .I was a great show."

But apart from all the magnitude, they are still a band...

"Because everything comes before they became a band. They are four friends that still have that coutryside Irish thing, that has a lot to do with the Argentinian. I think we are similar, it`s (Ireland) a country that has suffered too."

"You watch Bono on stage and he has an enegy and a voice that are incredible. I will have to go to a a voice coach ...how I heard him sing last Sunday was amazing! Two intense shows on Saturday and Sunday and the guy had the will to talk, take pictures with fans. He  could be quiet, he doesn´t  need anything else, he has nothing to add to his thing. Does he really need me on stage?"

Bono and Santaolalla: Lunch in the Land of Wine

Bono arrived this midday to the province of Mendoza to visit a winery  and have lunch with the  Argentinian   Oscar winning  music producer and musician, Gustavo Santaolalla.

He arrived to the airport accompanied by only one person to accept the invitation the owners of the winery Antigua Bodega Catena Zapata made him.

There he met the renowned producer Gustavo Santaolalla, creator of the  Oscar winning soundtracks of Brokeback Mountain and Babel.

Bono  arrived back to Buenos Aires late at night  to meet his band mates to get ready for their trip to Brazil where they will play on 9^th, 10^th and 13^th in  São Paulo`s Morumbi stadium.

U2 has just finished their 360º tour in Estadio Unico, La Plata, Argentina where  about 200,000  people saw them in three spectacular shows.
