A HOST of famous friends have gathered together to celebrate internationally acclaimed artist Guggi's first exhibition in Ireland in four years – and leading the way was best friend Bono.

There was a glowing turnout as Guggi unveiled his latest collection at the Kerlin Gallery in Dublin last night.

Showing his continued support for the creative visionary, the U2 frontman, who arrived with wife Ali Hewson, told the Irish Independent of his delight to see his close friend's work come to fruition.

"Normally I get to enjoy a preview of the pieces beforehand in the studio, but things have been so busy this time I didn't get a chance. He's just getting better and better every time, we're all so proud of him. He's extraordinary."

The superstar said he'll definitely consider adding to his growing collection by purchasing a painting.

Bono and Hewson were accompanied by The Edge and his wife, Morleigh Steinberg.

While he has shown in the UK, US and Argentina in recent months, guest of honour Guggi told the Irish Independent that it was particularly special to see his 21 pieces hang on the walls in Dublin again.

"This is my home town, I come from here and it's always particularly special when an exhibition is here.

"I'm surprised and flattered by the turnout, it's fantastic. It means everything to have my friends and family here."

It was also a family occasion for Guggi, who arrived with his wife, Sibylle, and their four boys, Noah, Eliah, Caleb and Gideon.

Bono and Edge attend commemoration service for Louis le Brocquy

Bono y Ali en Dublin en Abril de 2012 asistiendo al funeral de Louis le Brocquy

U2 SINGER Bono yesterday spoke about his decades-long friendship with the late artist Louis le Brocquy.

Bono  and his wife, Ali, attended a memorial service for the painter in St Patrick's Cathedral last Saturday.Among the many figures from the arts world in attendance were  the Edge from U2 and his wife Morleigh, Séamus Heaney, Robert Ballagh and John Boorman.

Yesterday, he fondly remembered the "walks, dinners and lunches" he shared with the artist, who called him an "old friend".

He also told how he had got a "bit of a fright" when the painter captured his likeness as a "big exploding head", and how, as a favour to Bono, he once passed on an autographed copy of U2's 'The Unforgettable Fire' album to his friend, Samuel Beckett.

"He was a kind of mentor to young artists. The fact that myself and Edge weren't painters didn't preclude us. He let us in, and Anne (le Brocquy's wife, the artist Anne Madden) as well. They were great educators," Bono said on RTE radio.

The frontman recounted how himself and his best friend, the artist Guggi, had attended exhibitions by le Brocquy as teenagers.

"Myself and Guggi used to go and see his work in our early teens. We couldn't believe it. We would stop and stare and try but we couldn't figure it out. We knew there was something going on and it was worth trying to understand, and these were these paintings of heads . . . That's when it started for us, the fascination."

His friendship with the painter began in his mid-20s when Bono "didn't know much about the world but he (Louis) seemed to know it all.

"He managed to slow down the molecules in everyone else. He spoke so calmly and everyone wanted that stillness. I am a much more kinetic and anarchic personality, so I was very attracted to that. Edge is a bit like him," he said.

The artist was to paint Bono on at least two occasions. One likeness, unveiled in 2003, now resides in the National Gallery.

"If you are a famous person, people just look at you. He seemed to look at the other you," Bono said.

"He was keen on meeting who you really were, and so when I saw that big painting of me in the National (Gallery), that was a bit of a fright. It was a big exploding head. I was thinking, I'm not sure I know where to put that head. It was a strange feeling, to be the subject of one of those paintings, and overwhelming,"he said.

The 51-year-old revealed how le Brocquy indulged him by talking about his friends Samuel Beckett and Francis Bacon.

"I used to bother him all the time about various characters like Samuel Beckett. 'What's he like,' I'd ask him. And he said, 'I should tell Sam about your work,' and I said, 'Really, would you do that?' So in about 1984 I signed a copy of U2's album 'The Unforgettable Fire' and I gave it to him. He told me Sam likes to know what is going on in Dublin, in music and film and everything like that."

Cold Dream Colour

More about Morleigh Steinberg´s dance homage to Irish artist, Louis le Brocquy.

Morleigh Steinberg, choreographer, wife of The Edge,  is Artistic Director of Cold Dream Colour: a ‘dance homage’ to Ireland’s greatest living artist, Louis le Brocquy.

The performance features original music by The Edge, and premieres in Dublin this Friday and Saturday, at the Pavilion Theatre. U2.com caught up with Morleigh ahead of opening night.

So, a dance ‘homage’ to Louis le Brocquy… what’s that all about?!

A dance homage – yes! When I first saw his work, about 15 years ago, I thought his paintings were so indicative of dance. For me, they were such an inspiration to create movement and I wanted to study the paintings, to really get into them.
He’s such an amazing artist. He’s worked so hard his whole life, and has remained so present in his own work. It’s all connected, it’s all going somewhere, it’s all very beautiful to see.
I had a conversation with him, briefly, and I asked if he’d ever seen his paintings danced. He said no, he had never seen his paintings danced! So the idea started there. He so often pays homage to different painters, and I thought, for his birthday we could pay homage to him.

Where did you start?

I looked at the whole body of his work, and then chose some of his periods that seemed relevant to movement or to theatre - or that really moved me, and stirred my soul. I asked two other choreographers - Liz Roche, from Ireland, and Oguri, who is Japanese and lives in LA - to look at the work too, and to see what they gravitated towards.
We studied the paintings, and the ideas behind them, and the technique and the colour, and started to make a piece from there.
The first ones I looked at were The Heads – beautiful white faces coming out of this beautiful light atmosphere. There is something so primal and so spiritual about them. So that was my first inspiration. And then the whole grey period, which had to do with post-war Ireland. A very bleak subject matter, but there’s always hope in Louis’ work.

Have you created a narrative to the performance?

There is a narrative in the way he painted, and we kind of stuck to that. There’s always hope in his paintings, a hope that rings true: the hope in the human spirit, in being human.
The dance is not chronological in terms of his work; it’s a loose narrative, just as his paintings are. You only ever look at one painting at a time, after all. They’re snapshots.
But I really didn’t want to create a literal interpretation of his paintings. I wanted to ask, what do they inspire in us?

How did Edge get on, creating the original music?

Well, he and Paul Chavez and I got into a studio, and it was a lot of fun. It’s so freeform; you’re creating sound beds. There are some melodic pieces, and pieces with rhythm; but it was fun and liberating for him to work on sound, rather than to work within the distinct structure of rock songs.
I asked them, “What do these paintings sound like? What is their sonic atmosphere?” I didn’t want them to make music for the dance, as such; I wanted them to make music for the paintings.
The result is at times atmospheric, and at times tuneful. But there are no vocals. It’s been recorded, but it will be mixed live by Paul on the night. So the music feels organic within the performance.

Was Edge using synths, or guitars, or what?

Oh my God... they used everything from a glass harmonica to guitars, to strange keyboards, to bottles… It was such fun. It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun.
Edge is pleased with how it’s turned out. We did a workshop performance earlier this year and he was very happy with it.

You’re from the States, and Louis le Brocquy is one of Ireland’s great living artists. Is this a cross-cultural embrace, for you?

When I first arrived here, I didn’t have much connection with Ireland at all - and looking at his paintings helped me to make a connection. I began to understand Ireland more, because I could relate to his paintings on a physical level. It was very personal; they helped me to feel more at home.

What do you hope your audience will take from Cold Dream Colour?

I hope it hits people at a very guttural level, as Louis’ work does. We’re dancing from the inside out. It’s not a superficial performance, that’s for sure. Even if people don’t understand it, they will still feel something.

Is Louis coming?

We hope so. He’s turning 94 on Wednesday, so it depends how much energy he has.

If he does get to see it, what do you hope he’ll draw from the experience?

You know, even if he just listens to the music and is inspired by that, I think it would be great. If he sees the performance and feels something of his work within it, that would be a success. And if he comes and just falls asleep and has a wonderful dream, I’ll be very happy.

Edge and Morleigh Together in Art Project

Louis le Brocquy: hopes to see his paintings 'dance'

U2 guitarist Edge and his choreographer wife Morleigh Steinberg have collaborated to create a music and dance piece inspired by the work of artist Louis le Brocquy.
'Cold Dream Colour', which makes its world premiere in Dun Laoghaire's Pavilion Theatre on November 12, marks the 94th birthday of the Dublin-born artist recognised as the foremost Irish painter of the 20th century.
Californian Steinberg, who married musician Edge in 2002, revealed she has been fascinated by Le Brocquy's art since she moved to Ireland 15 years ago and had asked his permission before embarking on the work.
"I asked him if he had ever seen his paintings danced? His face lit up and he replied, 'It would be an honour'," she said.
The show will be presented by Steinberg herself, along with other dancers including her sister Roxanne Steinberg, Grant McKay, 'Oguri' and Katherine O'Malley.
It is hoped that Le Brocquy will attend the show's opening.

International Women´s Day

International Women's Day (IWD) is marked on the 8th of March every year. It is a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.
The first IWD was observed on 28 February 1909 in the United States following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. Among other relevant historic events, it came to commemorate the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. The idea of having an international women's day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions.
On occasion of 2010 International Women's Day the International Committee of the Red Cross is drawing attention to the hardship displaced women endure. The displacement of populations is one of the gravest consequences of today's armed conflicts. It affects women in a host of ways. Women displaced by armed conflict – often living alone with their children – are frequently exposed to sexual violence, discrimination and intimidation. Many face poverty and social exclusion as well. International humanitarian law therefore includes specific provisions protecting women, for example when they are pregnant or as mothers of young children.

If we are talking about women who support, influence and care we can´t forget the women behind U2:Ali Hewson, Anne Acheson and Morleigh Steinberg-Evans .
Apart from being "U2´s wives", muses and inspiration, helpers and companions in life, they stand out on their own.

Ali Hewson
rappelling down Ireland's tallest building raise funds for Chernobyl Children's Project International's Homes of Hope program in 2009

Ali Hewson, Bono´s wife, is a recognized activist. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Political Science from University College Dublin (UCD) in 1989, shortly after giving birth to her first daughter, Jordan. She is a patron of Chernobyl Children's Project International, an organization accredited by the United Nations that works with children, families and communities who continue to be affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986.[She participated in Greenpeace protests against the Sellafield reprocessing plant and narrated Black Wind White Land, an Irish film which highlighted the plight of victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. She also participated in the film "Chernobyl Heart" with Adi Roche.
In addition to her own work, she has travelled and appeared with Bono extensively when participating in activist events such as campaigning against third world poverty. She and Bono founded the socially concious clothes company "EDUN".

Morleigh Steinberg-Evans

Morleigh , an American coreographer , dancer, filmmaker and lighting designer, met Edge when she was one of the belly dancers in the Zoo TV tour. Mother of two, she´s often seen accompanying her husband to events and parties, described as "a dark- eyed beauty", she has helped mould the scene of Dublin´s modern contemporary dancing.

Anne Acheson

Anne Acheson, Larry´s partner for almost 30 years, is a fine, beautiful lady with a very low profile. They met in their first year at Mount Temple School and seemed not to have separated since that moment.Mother of three children, she and Larry had been relatively successful in keeping their family life private. A great companion, she´s seen with Larry in important events, though as Larry has said "she has her own occupations".

U2 has always been surrounded by women, esp. in Principle Management ,where a great percetange of the staff are women. As Bono would sing "women are the future."

Not to forget the women who are in less advantageous position that us, ONE has launched a new campaign called Women ONE2ONE, the first step is to start an awareness campaign to end mother to child transmission of HIV.The group that can make this happen is The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria – who will be meeting with their key donors next week. Please join me in encouraging Global Fund Director Michel Kazatchkine and Global Fund donors to support efforts to end mother to child transmission of HIV as a priority intervention to stop the spread of the disease:
www.one.org/women/mothertochild/

Happy International Women´s Day!!!
A Day for most of us to celebrate, why not signing ONE´s petition?
