Released!-Human Rights Concert

¡RELEASED!” presents The Human Rights Concerts – the series of benefit concerts staged between 1986 and 1998 to raise awareness and funds for the Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights organisation Amnesty International. The first of these was “A Conspiracy Of Hope”, Amnesty’s 25th anniversary US concert tour in 1986. This was followed by “Human Rights Now!”, the historic 5-continent 20-concert world tour undertaken in 1988. The series continued with stand-alone concerts “An Embrace Of Hope” in Chile in 1990 and “The Struggle Continues…” in Paris in 1998. The list of musicians who contributed their services is extraordinary and includes some of the world’s foremost artists - drawn from several nations and representing a wide range of musical styles. The primary factor uniting them was their desire to donate their time and talents to place a spotlight on Amnesty’s vital work campaigning for people whose human rights are abused. Building on the achievements of Amnesty’s legendary “Secret Policeman’s Ball” benefit shows, albums and movies - these concerts brought awareness of the cause to an ever-wider public.  This new release is designed to continue that mission and raise further funds for Amnesty’s crucial work.

Ladies & Gentlemen, Larry Mullen Jr, the actor

The Tribeca Film Festival website has posted the synopsis of Man on the Train, the movie  starred by Donald Sutherland and Larry Mullen Jr.

The English-language remake of Patrice Leconte's award-winning French film of the same name, Man on the Train stars Donald Sutherland and musician Larry Mullen, Jr. in his acting debut.

A mysterious criminal (Mullen Jr.) rolls into a small town planning to knock off the local bank, assuming it will go off without a hitch. But when he encounters a retired poetry professor (Sutherland), his plans take an unlikely turn. With no place to stay, the professor generously welcomes him into his home. As the two men talk, a bond forms between these two polar opposites, and surprising moments of humor and compassion emerge. As they begin to understand each other more, they each examine the choices they’ve made in their lives, secretly longing to live the type of lifestyle the other man has lived, based on the desire to escape their own.

U2 in Music of Ireland Documentary

"The Music of Ireland - Welcome Home," a documentary featuring interviews and performances from U2, Pete Seeger, Sinead O'Connor and the Chieftans will debut on New York public television station WLIW on Feb. 17, then rollout to other PBS affiliates throughout March.

"Music of Ireland" will be available as a CD and DVD in a number of outlets: Barnes & Noble is the exclusive brick and mortar retail partner and will debut an in-store promotional campaign on March 2; Amazon.com will feature all the CD tracks digitally on a 45-day exclusive starting that same day. In addition, the CD and DVD will be bundled as a bonus for those who donate to public television during pledge drives.

The CD was produced by John Reynolds, and features new material by Clannad's Moya Brennan - who also hosts the documentary - O'Connor, the Chieftans, former Irish Tenor Ronan Tyanan and Shane MacGowan of the Pogues, among others.

The documentary "Music of Ireland" opens in 1960 with the success of the pioneering Clancy Brothers, and includes Liam Clancy's final U.S. television interview before his death. Other interviews include "Riverdance's" Michael Flatley, Bob Geldof and Academy Award-nominated director Jim Sheridan.

A sequel to the "Music of Ireland" is planned for later this year, and will focus on U2, Celtic Woman, The Cranberries, The Corrs, the Irish Tenors and songwriters Glen Hansard and Damien Rice.

The documentary was executive produced by The Elevation Group's Denny Young, who previously produced "Bonefish Grill's Notes From The Road" for Ovation, and is presented by WLIW in association with WNET.org and Tourism Ireland.

"For such a small country to produce such amazing talent and the way their music defines the people is just extraordinary," Young says. "It has fascinated me for most of my life and is something I wanted more people to be in tune with."

A Sort of Homecoming and Bad are live versions, from The Unforgettable Fire Tour that were on the highly sought after collectors item EP Wide Awake in America.

The version of 11 O'Clock Tick Tock was the b-side to 'Pride (In The Name of Love)' while Wire (Celtic Dub Remix) was previously on 7" vinyl given away free with NME in May 1985.

Under a Red Blood Sky (part 2)

Second part of our review on the DVD of the famous concert at Red Rocks, Denver ,Colorado, 1983.

The band quickly moved into the next song, ‘Twilight’ and then one of my favourite earlier songs, ‘An Cat Dubh/Into the heart’, followed. The Edge’s guitar in this song is so seductive … and you can feel the mood of the song, remembering that Bono said this song is ‘definitely about sex’ … oh yes, it is!

The band´s performances was so energetic and I had the impression that it was tangible and real..and when I saw the stream emanating from their mouth as they breathed, I gathered maybe they were also trying to stay warm!

Before "Surrender" could start, Bono had something he wanted to share with the crowd:

"What can I say, really? What can I say? You know, at first we wanted to make this film in the sunshine, here at Red Rocks, and then we realised that would be very wrong for this group. This is what´s right for this group, this film. This film is going right across the world as a record of tonight. You wanna say hello to Japan? Say hello to Japan! From an LP titled, "War", a song titled "Surrender".Would you dance with me?"

And of course,who could resist?

"Two hearts beat as one" is another of my early favourites, and seeing them performing this live, was absolutely amazing!"Seconds"was a crowd favourite, and youcould see them singing along with Bono, despite the cold and the drizzly rain.

Under a Red Blood Sky (Part 1)

Surely among the U2-related things that brought aobut 2008 the release on DVD of "Live at Red Rocks" together with the lauching of U23D was to be highlighted.

Here is our review of the famous concert in Denver,Colorado,US,5ht June,1983.

"In the shadows, boy meets man".That line from "Twilight" on U2´s 1980 debut album, "Boy"captures so much about the mstery and intensit of U2´s early years.
Viewing the seventeen performances on"U2 LIve from Red Rocks", which was filmed on June 5, 1983, one can see a band straining beyond everything it had previously achieved to propel itself to a new ,unexplored place.

The words of Anthony De Curtis in the DVD booklet, was already an indicaiton of what awaited me when I bought the "Red Rocks" DVD. The first time I had an idea of this particular concert (before reading it in depth in U2 By U2) was the music video "Sunday Bloody Sunday" on the U218 Singles DVD.
When I read that the concert, previously released on VHS, (remember those?), would be re-mastered and released on DVD, I held my breath, hoping that I, living in the southern tip of Africa, would be able to buy it.
The DVD starts with a little documentary (aprox. 3-5 minutes long) showing air shots of Denver, Colorado, and Bono talking about he found Red Rocks a beautiful place, a place to make a statement...how righ he was! The camera shows what the amphitheatre looked like amidst the drizzly rain and fog...absolutely stunning! The fans were very optimistic, saying that the band should feel comfortable in the weather conditions, so much like Ireland.
The band was introduced, “good evening, a warm Red Rocks to a band from Dublin, Ireland … U2!” They ran onto stage, something I’ve never seen them do before! They start off the concert with a song from the ‘Boy’ album, ‘Out of control’, and immediately, I was captivated & drawn into their energetic performance willingly … the atmosphere was one of excitement and expectation, just waiting to see what U2 would come up with next. Bono rushed to the microphone, a huge smile on his face, and greeted the crowd with, “Good evening!” During the performance of this song, Bono & Edge move to the front part of the stage, and Bono asks the crowd: “Do you know who this is? This is The Edge!”
