Auction has The Edge with acoustic guitar sale

A simple-looking Spanish guitar that might not otherwise be worth €30 could be worth more than 100 times that thanks to the signature of its previous owner: U2’s The Edge.

The Hokada nylon-string instrument may well have been the first used by a young David Evans, but it had served its purpose by around 1980, when his mother Gwenda sold it to a teaching colleague in Scoil Íosa in Malahide, Co Dublin.

U2 only had one single under their belts at that stage and neither party to the sale could have imagined they would become the world’s biggest rock group.

More than three decades later, and her own guitar lessons well and truly behind her, the purchaser has placed it for sale in auction later this month. The acoustic guitar is estimated to fetch €3,000 to €5,000, — helped by the fact that The Edge signed it years after his mother sold it for around the same price she had first paid herself.

U2 contribute to new Irish Hospice Foundation book

Celebrating the "unique relationship" between a man and his child, Sons+Fathers is a new book from the Irish Hospice Foundation with a large number of A-list contributors.

It takes its inspiration from Bono, who has donated drawings of his father towards the end of his life for the anthology. Also offering personal contributions from the world of music will be the other members of U2, Paul McGuinness and his son Max, Paul McCartney, Bob Geldof, Julian Lennon and Gavin Friday.

From film and stage: John Boorman, Daniel Day-Lewis, Gabriel Byrne, Neil Jordan, Paul Cusack and Colin Farrell.

Writers include John Banville, Roddy Doyle, Robert Fisk, Paul Auster, Mick Heaney, Colum McCann, Joseph O’Connor and Salman Rushdie, while Colm Tóibín pens the introduction.

From the political world there are contributions from President Clinton, Alastair Campbell and Bobby Shriver.

Sons+Fathers is set to be published this summer to coincide with Father's Day (Sunday June 21) and proceeds will go towards The Irish Hospice Foundation’s Nurses for Night Care Programme, a service which provides over 1,400 nights of free nursing care at home annually to people with a non-malignant terminal illness.

Irish Hospice Foundation CEO Sharon Foley says:

"Bono planted the seed for this book with his generous gift of the drawing he made of his father when he was dying.  He asked if they could be used to raise money for The Irish Hospice Foundation, so we decided on a book, and the net was cast wide and far. We were blown away by the response and generosity of the participants, all who are very busy, well-known people."

The Edge’s first guitar to be sold at Dublin auction

Rock band U2, whose guitarist The Edge (second left) learned to play on the instrument being auctioned. Photograph: Brenda Fitzsimmons
U2 guitarist learned to play on ‘modest little’ instrument expected to fetch up to €1,800

A classical guitar that launched one of the most successful careers in Ireland’s musical history has turned up at auction.

The “learner’s classical guitar” was originally bought by the late Gwenda Evans, a Malahide primary school teacher, in the 1970s for her son David. He later joined a band called U2, styled himself “The Edge” and became one of the best-known rock guitarists in the world.

But, according to Whyte’s auctioneers in Dublin, “he left his first guitar behind at his mother’s house”.

Teaching colleague

Stuart Purcell, a spokesman for Whyte’s, said “around 1980, when a teaching colleague of Gwenda’s in Scoil Íosa, Malahide [a community school in north Dublin], mentioned that she needed a guitar, as she was beginning lessons, Gwenda offered to sell her The Edge’s old one for the price she had bought it for”.

Mr Purcell said the unnamed woman, who paid about £20, later abandoned the lessons but kept the guitar.

Then, “years later she met The Edge who signed the guitar”.

She has now decided to sell it and consigned it to auction. It will go under the hammer in Whyte’s sale of “Rock, Pop & Movie Memorabilia” in Dublin on March 15th and has been assigned an estimate of between €1,200 and €1,800.

David Evans (53), of Killiney, Co Dublin, and known as The Edge or, simply, Edge, was born in England but moved to Ireland with his family during early childhood.

‘Mrs Edge’

He joined the band which became U2 while a pupil at the Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Clontarf in 1976.
Following the death of Gwenda Evans in 2012, U2’s lead singer, Bono, referred to her as “Mrs Edge” and recalled she was the band’s “first roadie” who had driven the schoolboy rockers to various gigs in her orange Volkswagen car.
In 2007, The Edge donated a cream-coloured Gibson Les Paul guitar to a charity auction in the United States, held to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina, which sold for $240,000.
Whyte’s said that guitar had been regularly used in live U2 performances and had been seen by millions of concert-goers worldwide, whereas the Malahide instrument was “a modest little guitar”.

Rare U2 recordings from 1980 go up for auction

A rare U2 live recording and audio from an interview are set to go up for auction.

The recordings come from an early concert from the band, which took place at the Vera venue in Groningen, Holland on October 16, 1980. The live recording is made up of four songs, and the previously unheard interview audio is 15 minutes long and consists of frontman Bono and guitarist The Edge discussing their plans for the band.

Stockport's Omega Auctions have said that the interview includes quotes from the pair in which they say: "We don't like England". They also show their ambitions for the group, commenting: "U2 wanna be the biggest group in the world." In addition they add their thoughts on the United States, saying: "America is sick and wounded and has a lot of bad groups".

The sale takes place on May 30 and the recordings are expected to sell for £1,000. The recordings also come with previously unpublished photos, shown above, which come complete with copyright, as does the interview audio. However, the live recording is being sold as an artefact and is therefore for personal use only.

A spokesperson for U2 recently denied that the band have pushed back the release date of their 13th studio album to 2015. Investigations by Billboard suggested that the band would now be releasing their new LP next year. It reported that the band had booked further studio time with producers Paul Epworth and Ryan Tedder, who would join the project's main producer Danger Mouse.

Speaking to The Guardian, a spokesperson for the band flatly denied the claims, saying: "U2's album is planned for this year (2014), is still on track and touring plans haven’t been confirmed yet."

Bono, Benedict and Whoopi among secret offerings at Affordable Art Fair

U2 singer and actors Goldberg and Cumberbatch and other celebrities turn artist for postcard sale to raise funds for school.

Bono's postcard for the Affordable Art Fair
Bono's postcard. Photograph: Affordable Art Fair/Rex Features

The work will appear along with equally distinguished ones by  Benedict Cumberbatch, and Julian Lennon in a silent auction to raise funds for a primary school in north London at the annual Affordable Art Fair.

Cumberbatch and Bono have gone for self portraits – the Sherlock star's a Byronic profile, the U2 frontman's a quick slash of blue marker conjuring up his trademark sunglasses. Lennon has sent a sweetly traditional landscape in red marker on cardboard, complete with duck pond and cottage with smoking chimney, which any of the pupils might feel they could at least match in art class. Goldberg's is more a message than a painting, a cheery greeting to "all students everywhere".

The bidders will know which celebrity they're aiming for, but more starry names will be hidden among the hundred little works on sale. The comedians David Baddiel and Morwenna Banks; Jeff Kinney, the author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid; and Babybird singer, Stephen Jones, are among those providing their artistic juices.

The postcards will be on sale for £45 each, but the buyer will only learn the name of the artist after the money is handed over – a fundraising scheme modelled on the postcard fair at the Royal College of Art, which now has buyers queueing round the block every year for bargain works by artists including Tracey Emin and the Chapman Brothers.

This time all the works at the fair, which opens on Thursday for three days on the edge of Hampstead Heath, are being sold to raise funds for the New End primary school. The fair, now an international event aimed at art lovers with lighter pockets than those who flock to Frieze or the great auction houses, has attracted more than 1.2 million visitors and sold art worth more than £180m over the past 14 years.

More Unknown Early U2 Pictures

The British Auction House, Bonhams, holds a sale of several old photos, among which is  a whole set of U2 ones.

"An historic set of photographs of U2 at the Stella Ballroom, Limerick, Ireland during the Limerick Civic Week Pop '78 Competition, 17th March 1978, comprising thirteen strip negatives and a corresponding set of prints, 20.5 x 30.5cm (8 x 12in), to be sold with copyright"

The sale is on 23rd June and most of the pictures belong to the  event  in 1978 which marked the first time the band appeared under the name of U2. There was a prize of £500 and the promise of a record deal. They had entered the competition under the name they were using at the time, The Hype. However, they felt that if they did well in the competition, they would be stuck with this name and so changed to U2 at the last minute, a choice they had been considering adopting for a while.

On the evening of the event the band found themselves up against a number of other, seemingly more experienced entrants and felt there was little hope of success. As Bono recalled in the book 'U2 On U2', ''There were bands there that could play in time and in tune and with great confidence, all of which we couldn't pull off. But, you know, some bands have everything but 'it'. We had nothing but 'it'.'' They played three tracks, 'Sweet Missions', 'Life On A Distant Planet' and 'The TV Song' and, much to everyone's astonishment, they were awarded first place. It was a pivotal moment for the band and Larry has commented that ''...We had no real idea how winning in Limerick would change our lives.''

One of the images has been used in the photographer's own publicity material in the past but the remainder are unpublished.
