Hear U2's Lustrous New Single 'You're the Best Thing About Me'

Band debuts official lead single from upcoming 'Songs of Experience' album

 U2 released "You're the Best Thing About Me," the gleaming lead single from their upcoming album Songs of Experience on Wednesday 6th September.

"You're the Best Thing About Me" is a joyous ear-worm about romantic dissatisfaction. Larry Mullen Jr. holds time with a firm, stuttering pattern on drums, and the Edge carries the chorus with pretty shards of melody from his guitar. High backing vocals echo many of Bono's lines, and the singer shows off his own falsetto during a gliding, multi-tracked bridge.


But underneath that appealing surface, Bono is playing the part of a malcontent. "I'll be crying out, how bad can a good time be?/ Shooting off my mouth, that's another great thing about me/ I have everything, but I feel like nothing at all," he sings. "You're the best thing about me," he admits, before adding, "the best things are easy to destroy."


"You're the Best Thing About Me" is the second song U2 have shared recently. The band released "The Blackout" last week.


Speaking with Rolling Stone about Songs of Experience in May, Bono said, "I thought it was done last year," but admitted that the extra time in the studio "has made [the album] better.""The problem is we have 15 songs and to get them down to 12," he continued. "We don't like long players. The actual track listing is not set yet, but we have some proper, proper fuck-off songs."

U2's 'Invisible' presents band at its aspirational best

Review of "Invisible" by By Randall Roberts for The Los Angeles Times:

The new single from U2 is called "Invisible," and it was released for free on iTunes on Super Bowl Sunday. Produced by Danger Mouse and taken from the band's forthcoming album, it's both a pleasant surprise and a fairly typical track by the world's biggest rock band. Relying on the Teutonic "motorik" beat as the propellant, it features the kind of grand, aspirational chorus that Bono and buds were born to birth and flies on the wings of a typically sticky guitar melody courtesy of the Edge.
Which is another way of saying, if you're not down with U2's vibe, don't consider "Beautiful Day" to be among the band's best, have made your mind up about Bono or consider them incapable of cruising down roads no other major rock band dare travel, get off the bus at the next stop.
Me, I think it's a prime U2 jam, a snagged-from-the-ether track so logical as to feel somehow fated to exist. But, then, I'm a male who's a sucker for that beat, cry during movies and tend to look for the best in people, so of course I'm a Bono target.

The track hooks from the first tone, commencing like a lost Kraftwerk outtake from "Autobahn," introducing a mechanical rhythm that moves independent of drummer Larry Mullen Jr. This beat is the song's backbone and coasts through "Invisible" effortlessly, with Mullen adding his archetypal snare and bass-kick combo and the Edge layering guitar tracks atop one another.

Heard as an instrumental minus Bono's vocals, "Invisible" is the kind of monolith of musical logic one hopes to hear from U2: two verses, chorus, two verses, chorus, bridge, fade.

To accept U2 at this point, of course, is to expect that lyrically the band will work to inspire, will convey some sort of grandly unified message that speaks truth to power without being too political about it. "Invisible" is exactly that: an uplifting message song with little nuance but much Truth.

"I'm more than you know/I'm more than you see here/More than you let me be," sings Bono, harnessing notions of self-respect, both the personal kind and the universal-struggle kind. He's already given a departing lover his heart in the song's first verse and declared independence in the second. "I'm more than you know/A body in a soul/You don't see me but you will/I am not invisible/I am here."

He shifts from micro to macro as the song proceeds, suggesting that self-confidence and tolerance can combine to bring peace.

"There is no them, there's only us," he repeats as the band, as crisp and electric as ever, drops from distortion to clarity and back again. "There's only you, and there's only me," concludes Bono, and the song fades.

The band has yet to confirm a release date for its still untitled new album, but don't be surprised if U2 pulls a Beyoncé and unveils it suddenly.

New single?

In the RS interview, Bono tells the magazine that "Every Breaking Wave" could be released as new single during the spring of 2010. Iit was Jimmy Iovine´s favourite, a song the band didn´t include in NLOTH.
According to what the band says in the interview, they are going to take advantage of the winter recess to go back to the studio and work with those songs they discarded for NLOTH. They also want to go back to the material they had recorded with producer Rick Rubin while Bono and Edge will devote their time(any free time?) to their Superman project.

Bono: We certainly don't want to go away for a few years. [The next] album is called Songs of Ascent, and it's a very clear idea. If we're going to do another rock record, I want to do Spider-Man. I just haven't talked Adam and Larry into that.

I would like to have one of our songs on the pop charts. It's my only disappointment [with No Line on the Horizon] People love, love the album it's had rave reviews, not just in the U.S., but all over the world. But I would like a few pop songs on it. So I would like, even on Songs of Ascent, songs that have a shot at that. I would like to come back with a new single in the spring — "Every Breaking Wave" was Jimmy Iovine's favorite song, and lots of people got upset when we took that off.

Crazy in September

The single "I´ll go crazy if I don´t go crazy tonight" will be released on September 7th.
It is accompanied by two videos - one of which was created by Irish animation filmmaker David O'Reilly, and is the first animated clip for the band since 1995's 'Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me'. The second is a live-action video filmed in Barcelona on the 360 Tour and directed by Alex Courtes, who also directed the music videos for Magnificent and Get On Your Boots.


I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight will be released online, and as a CD with a live version of Magnificent, recorded at the Somerville Theatre in Boston in March 2009. The single will also be available on 7" vinyl backed with the Dirty South Remix, and as a maxi single with the Dirty South, Fish Out Of Water and Redanka remixes. The artwork for the single features a still from the David O'Reilly video, and a live shot from the 360 Tour.

I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight

New single from NLOTH: "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" which will be released on August 17th by Mercury.

The video will be made by Irish animation film-maker David O'Reilly who won the 2009 Golden Bear at Berlinale for his animated short film "Please Say Something".

The band are currently gearing up (as we can see in the almost daily posted videos in U2.com) for their much anticipated the 360 Tour which is set to start in Barcelona later this month.
